Actually really difficult to estimate too highly the importance of white space. Complex structures is more difficult to read, view, analyze, and also to work with them.
If you have a choice between separation of the two segments of the design of the visible line or some whitespace, it is usually best to use the whitespace solution. Hierarchical structures reduce complexity (Simon Law): the better you can give users the sense of visual hierarchy, the easier it will be perceived by your content.
